Teeth Removal FAQ

Is it possible my appearance could change if I have multiple teeth removed?

Yes. There is the possibility that your face could experience a slight change upon completion of your orthodontic treatment for the removal of permanent fangs. It is important for people to understand that if any changes in your facial appearance do occur, they will be extremely minor. In fact, most people experience changes that are so small they are not able to be easily seen. So if you are worried that you will end up looking like the Elephant Man after your orthodontic procedure, you can now put those fears to bed for good. It is simply not going to happen.

Are teeth only removed if it is necessary?

If your orthodontist suggests that you have some of your teeth removed, he or she is not doing so on a whim. The extraction of teeth is a serious matter and should never be taken lightly. Your orthodontist understands this, so if a recommendation to extract teeth has been made, you obviously have a situation which is serious enough to make your orthodontist believe that extraction is the only course of action. A dental professional's first priority is to attempt to save the teeth. This is sometimes not possible and extraction is called for. A lack of space in the mouth is a frequent cause for the removal of teeth. Models, pictures and x-rays will all be thoroughly studied before the decision to extract your teeth is made.

Will teeth removal preserve your profile?

A highly trained orthodontist will do everything in his or her power to make sure your appearance does not change after your procedure. The removal of teeth is a procedure that can not be reversed. Therefore, extra care must be taken before this course of action is decided upon. Your orthodontist will first try to come up with an alternative plan that will allow him or her to save every one of your teeth. The position of your lips, the size of your teeth and the size of your jaws are all important details that will be considered as part of the decision making process. If you have a profile you are happy with, your orthodontist will do their best to preserve it.

Can your face can still change if you don't have teeth removed?

While it is possible that you will experience minor facial changes if you have teeth removed, these changes will undoubtedly be much more noticeable if you do not have the teeth removed when it is recommended. When a person's teeth are crowded at a moderate or severe level, the teeth in the front will gradually be pushed forward as the arches start their alignment. Along with the front teeth, the overlying lips will also begin to make their slow journey forward. When this happens, the person will often end up with buck teeth. This will frequently result in a person having difficulty closing their lips. In a case like this, the person's appearance is much worse than if the teeth had been removed.

Can your appearance be improved by having teeth extracted?

While the perception is that the extraction of teeth will only hurt a person's appearance, the truth is that it is often improved in many cases. When teeth are removed from the side and braces are used to push the front teeth back, a person will no longer have buck teeth that protrude and look unappealing. There is another advantage to having this procedure performed. By pushing the front teeth back in the mouth, the lips will be able to close in a way that appears attractive and natural. This will help the profile of the patient to be improved.

Can teeth removal fight the aging process?

There are many people who believe they should avoid having any of their ivory removed at all costs. While a tooth should never be removed for a frivolous reason, it is important to remember that your orthodontist only has your best interest at heart. He or she would never make the recommendation to extract your teeth unless they thought it was going to help your appearance and orthodontic treatment in the long run. There is one other important thing you should keep in mind as you go along your orthodontic journey. A trained orthodontist will know all of the changes that naturally happen in a person's face as they age. Because of this, they will be able to predict these changes before they happen and formulate a treatment plan to effectively combat them. Orthodontist
