Words of Wisdom No.5 – Gargle with Apple Cider Vinegar

Nowadays, thousands of mouthwash brands are in the market. People who needed to gargle with anti-bacterial mouthwash can just buy over-the-counter or buy what’s prescribed to them. Gargling with mouthwash helps reduce the bacteria in your mouth especially if you’re not able to brush your teeth yet. Most travelers bring mouthwash in long flights to help them keep their mouth healthy despite the limitations of their situations. Staying in a friend’s house also requires a mouthwash to keep your breath fresh and your mouth healthy.

However, there’s actually a good substitute for commercial mouthwashes sold in the market. This replacement can be found in anyone else’s kitchen hence if you don’t have a mouthwash or if you forgot it, then you still have an alternative in order to make sure your teeth are protected. All you need to do is to gargle with apple cider vinegar in order to kill bacteria. Aside from reducing the bacteria in your mouth, you’re also doing your teeth a favor as vinegar removes stains. Hence, it can actually make your teeth whiter if you gargle with apple cider vinegar regularly.

Eating dark colored foods and drinking coffee or colas can stain your teeth. If you’re not in the position to be able to brush immediately or gargle with mouthwash, then using apple cider vinegar as your best option. If you’re experiencing other bite problems, then it’s time to contact the professionals in your area. King Orthodontics can help diagnose your case and lay down the appropriate treatment plan.

Words of Wisdom No.4 – Eat ‘Detergent’ Foods

Have you ever heard of “detergent foods”? If not, they are actually the type of food that can clean your teeth while you are eating them. Sounds ironic but they do exist and I bet you are eating the most popular one – the apple. The apple fruit is known to be the “nature’s toothbrush”. Other detergent foods include popcorn, raw carrots, and celery. In general, the characteristics of detergent foods include crispiness and firmness. As you chew them, it scrapes off the plaque as your teeth grind them. Knowing which foods are considered detergent foods can help you improve your overall oral health.

If you’re going on a sleep over and you forgot your toothbrush, there’s a good way to reduce the plaque on your teeth by eating detergent foods last. Just make sure that the popcorn you eat is unsweetened or it will not be considered as a detergent food in this matter. Other scenarios include parties and other gatherings wherein you will be home late and hence will not be able to brush immediately after eating. If this is the case, just eat the detergent food last.

Overall, aside from detergent foods, there are other things you can do in order to clean your teeth if you forgot your toothbrush in a camping or sleepover. You can buy a toothbrush from the nearest store, ask your friends if they have an extra unused toothbrush, or ask for salt. Just rub the salt gently on your teeth (do not swallow) and then rinse afterwards.

Why have TMJ Problems become Seasonal?

Why do Teenage Patients Suffer more TMJ Problems in Spring?

In every spring, orthodontic offices usually receive a higher number of calls from patients who are seeking medication due to a suddenly appearing jaw pain.  Most parents also report their children, teenagers to having pain in their jaws, and this is coming with them experiencing trouble when eating, sleeping or studying. The most surprising thing is that it happens at the same time during every year, and this is not a coincidence. In this article, we seek to explain why TMJ problems are often in spring among teenagers.

Common signs and symptoms for TMJ include pain in jaw joints, facial muscles or even around the ear. Other people may feel pain around the neck or even shoulders. When closing your mouth, the patients also witness clicking, popping or grating sounds. Other people may hear these noises and lack other symptoms. During the process of chewing or biting, the patients have a lot of difficulties, and this may even translate to poor appetite. Other signs include hearing loos, headaches, dizziness, ear pain, ringing in the ears as well as trouble when opening the mouth.

Among student patients, late April and early May are the most stressful and busiest parts of the year. At this time, these students have projects, papers, graduation, tests and other responsibilities that have to occur by the end of their academic year. As a result, their bodies and minds are weighed heavily. These stress factors usually affect the eating and sleeping habits of these students. The way these students chew using their muscles is also affected. After an examination of the muscles, it is always vivid that the pain is found on the overlying lower molars, not in actual joints. Sore soreness that is found in the chewing muscles is a suggestion that the students have Para functional habits.

If you wish to help people around this age, it is important to first recognize the cause of their pain. A practitioner should understand that the reason for this pain is because they’re in a stressful time of the year. In some instances, helping the teenager to know that they are grinding and trenching is usually good enough to let them stop the bad habits. Taking an over the counter medication such as Tylenol or Advil is also a good option for reducing the pain in the jaws. Patients may also perform sample physical exercise with their jaws. This could be done by the activity of their elbow on the surface of the knee. The patient should then make a fist of their hands, and use the fist to support the jaws. When this I done repeatedly, the mouth opening muscles are contracted and sore muscles are allowed to relax.

The best thing is that when this time of the year has passed, most of the problems of this nature are no longer found among teenagers. We wish to say good luck to all our patients as they prepare to finish another academic year.

If you have ever experienced pains in your jaw or are faced with any other oral ailment, Kings Orthodontics are the professionals to get in touch with.

Word of Wisdom No. 2: Chuck Your Toothbrush

Changing your toothbrush once in a while is part of your overall oral health routine. Using the same toothbrush for too long can cause you to bring old bacteria back to your mouth again. Your old toothbrush might not also be fit to clean your teeth thoroughly anymore since the bristles will probably wear in time. So when is the right time for you to replace your toothbrush? Experts advise to replace the head of your electric toothbrush (or buy a new one) once every two to three months. Although this timeline is calculated based on facts and other statistics, there are still factors which you need to consider than just following this timeline strictly.

Replacing your toothbrush every two to three months is good, but there are some exceptions to this rule. You need to examine your toothbrush and look at its bristles closely, in order to determine if they can still clean your teeth properly. If the bristles seem out of place and are already weak, then it’s time to change your toothbrush even if it hasn’t reached the two-month period yet. Delaying the replacement can compromise the cleanliness of your teeth leading to plaques. In return, plaques build up immediately and before you know it, you’ll be on your way to your dentist for tooth extraction.

Therefore, following the timeline and being vigilant and observant can help you save your extra time, money and effort in order to maintain a good oral health. Plus, you’ll be able to save your precious teeth too!

Smile Quote No. 28: A Smile is the Powerful Weapon you can Break Ice with it

A smile is the powerful weapon you can break ice with it. With the right dental work, you can feel comfortable with the smile you have and show it off to friends, family, and to people you meet in a professional setting. For the smile of your life, consider scheduling an appointment with an orthodontist in Centerville.

Why Smiles Boost Self-Esteem

Smiling is a natural reaction to emotions or experiences a person finds pleasing. However, when a person is self-conscious about their dental health, they may repress their smile, even when they want to smile happily. Smiling is beneficial to one’s health because the act of smiling releases endorphins in the brain. This causes a wave of positive emotions. So, even when a person feels emotionally stable, forcing a smile can often promote feeling happy. When that self-consciousness toward your smile comes in, you are repressing a positive chemical balance in your brain.

Smiling Is Socially Beneficial

This seems like a no-brainer, but it is often lost on many who wish not to smile out of fear their teeth will be scrutinized. As social animals, we react positively when we see someone smile. On interpersonal levels, seeing someone you care about smiling will make you feel good since you can feel that the person is happy. On a professional level, smiling is a social cue of confidence, a positive outlook toward one’s profession or duties, and shows employers you are willing to interact with co-workers and superiors.

Starting Early

When your child has some dental issues, it’s very important that you contact an orthodontist for kids. If the child does not have proper dental care applied to them, the child could miss out on beneficial social interactions that will help with their self-esteem and help them become more sociable individuals. If you are ready for the smile of your life, contact the professionals at King Orthodontics today about improving you or your child’s dental health today.

Smile Quote No. 27: If You Smile at Someone They May Smile Back

Smiling at someone means you’re opening up your heart to them. It means you’re welcoming them and that you are willing to be their friends. It can also mean acceptance especially during first encounters. Have you ever wondered why people smile back at you when you smile at them? It’s not that there’s a general guideline to smile back every time people smile at you but most people do.

This is because smiling is contagious. If you smile at someone, they smile back at you because they wanted to return the same courtesy you showed to them. It means you have touched their lives and that they are grateful you did. When someone is feeling down and depressed, smiling at them can help ease the pain away. It’s like helping someone cope with his or her problems by just smiling at them. It doesn’t cost you a lot but it does mean something big towards the person you smiled at.

Don’t have the confidence to smile? Worry no more! Treating each patient with care and compassion, King Orthodontics is here to help. Contact King Orthodontics today

Your Lingual Braces Guide

What Are Lingual Braces?

Lingual braces are metallic braces, similar to the normal braces, and they help in the aligning of teeth. The only difference is that for lingual braces, instead of being placed over the teeth, they are placed behind the teeth. They are totally behind the teeth, including the brackets and the wires. There are a host of manufacturers, each with their special variations to the lingual braces. There are various advantages and disadvantages to lingual braces, which someone should know before having them put in.

Advantages

Faster treatment time is attained with lingual braces than with traditional braces. Since there has been an increasing demand for lingual braces, it has set off a lot of research and improvement efforts, allowing for better and faster results. However, the healing time may depend on a host of factors, such as the manufacturer type, the type of dentist who performs the installation and the extent of the dental condition.

Many lingual brace manufactures have designed an effective type of braces whereby the braces blend in very well with the tooth structure. The patient will thus need fewer wire changes as compared to traditional braces.

Disadvantages

They are hard to clean. Oral hygiene is essential, and even with braces one has to keep the mouth clean to avoid some nasty consequences. Since it is metallic like the normal type of braces, it will harbor dirt and bacteria. To reach all the crevices, one will need to put in some extra time and effort. For those who are really busy, they might be unable to do this, and may end up getting stained and infected teeth.

Lingual braces are really expensive. Though one might say that all oral care procedures may be really expensive, the price of lingual braces is a little too much for the normal consumer. The situation gets worse for those who have extensive tooth damage, as they have to dish out huge sums of money to repair the condition.

Braces push the teeth into shape. Though this may sound really easy, it is a really uncomfortable procedure. Lingual braces on the other hand are really painful. They make chewing very hard, and on the first days may cause some slight distortions to speech.

Someone who has had braces put in can attest to the fact that they are really hard to get used to. This is no different with lingual braces.

Another demerit with lingual braces is that they are not universal. Up to date, there are not many orthodontists who offer lingual braces, since some of the current one’s might have to incur additional cost in looking for and commuting to a dentist who offers lingual braces procedures. Also, one might not feel really comfortable getting their braces put in by a dentist who they have no prior experience with.

Lingual braces are a simple way to align the teeth without having to endure the unsightly traditional braces. It is surely an option worth considering. You only have to weigh the merits and the demerits.

Smile Quote No. 26: Begin a New Day with a Simple Smile

How do you begin your day? Most people start their day with a prayer while others begin it with a cup of coffee. For busy individuals, their day usually starts by taking a bath and preparing everything they need for work or school. While others are busy at the beginning of their day, some people also have the luxury to relax, watch the views from their windows, or jog in the park at the start of their day. Provided with the wide array of activities you can do right after you wake up in the morning, only few people begin a new day with a simple smile.

Beginning your day with a smile is like beginning your day right. It means you are happy and thankful that you still get to wake up for the morning and experience life once again. You may have a lot of problems and struggles at the moment but smiling makes all your worries go away. You will feel light, your pain will be alleviated, and your heart will be lifted. Six Month Smiles Orthodontic Treatment Explained

Does the Six Month Smiles Orthodontic Treatment Actually Work?

All patients are looking for the absolute quickest way that they can undergo orthodontic treatment to get the perfect smile. Orthodontics has changed dramatically even over the past decade and there are now more treatment options available to patients than ever before. The idea of large metal braces with headgear is a notion that is disappearing for many patients because of these new treatment options. Perhaps one of the most promising orthodontic treatments that has come out recently is the six month smile treatment.

smile

Dimitris Papazimouris via Compfight

Six month smile is advertised as being a cheaper and faster form of orthodontic treatment that can really work in just six months time. The six month smiles system is essentially a set of braces in a box that can be provided to any dentist who is willing to attend a two-day seminar. Unlike some other forms of orthodontic treatment the six-month smile treatment requires only minimal training. Each of the six-month smile kits will contain similar materials and the braces are simply built on appointment using a special mouthpiece, brackets and wires.

Six-month smiles can actually work to move teeth and make improvements to someones smile but it may not always be a full substitute for regular braces or traditional forms of orthodontic treatment.

The main disadvantage from six month smiles is that it can be provided by dentists who are not certified in orthodontics. A trained orthodontist will be able to provide solutions and treatment options that can give you the perfect smile where as six month smiles is just designed to make improvements and generally for cases that require only a bit of treatment.

It can allow you to see some great progress in six months but it may not be able to correct some of the more difficult issues in a smile. An orthodontist with years of experience and training will be able to provide a treatment option that can give you your dream smile rather than make just a few corrections.

For fixing mild alignment problems with front teeth however the six-month smiles treatment is very effective and very quick. Unlike using traditional braces six-month smiles allows patients that need minimal improvements to get access to treatment much more cost effectively and also ensures that their treatment is kept very short at just six-months.

If you would like to learn more about the six-month smiles orthodontic treatment or learn if this is a treatment option that would be effective for you, please call King Orthodontics in Centerville or Fairborn for a free consultation today.
