Evidence has been found that even our past ancestors attempted to straighten and repair their teeth. In the tombs of the Etruscans, a civilization predating ancient Rome, several remains were found with ancient braces. This culture used gold, silver, and a fiber made from animal intestines and wrapped the teeth. This is considered the earliest known form of orthodontic braces. Centuries later in 1728, Fauchard is credited with introducing the first ‘technology’ in orthodontics. It was a simple device made to expand the dental arch.
It wasn’t until around the 1880’s that orthodontics was granted the title of a ‘science.’ Prior to that time, teeth were extracted and make-shift braces varied from dentist to dentist if they were even available at all. Due to this several different people have been influential in ‘inventing’ braces.
During the 1880’s J. N. Farrar published two extremely significant volumes called “A Treatise on the Irregularities of the Teeth and Their Corrections.” (http://inventors.about.com/od/dstartinventions/a/dentistry_4.htm). He was known for his consistent and effective braces and for suggesting that by using mild force over time the teeth would move. The information he provided was so significant he is often referred to as the father of American orthodontics. Pulling from Farrar’s ideas, Henry Baker introduced the use of rubber bands in 1893.
In 1894, Eugene Talbot became the first dentist to use X-rays in an orthodontic procedure. He found that X-rays could be used to locate teeth that were impacted under the gum. By locating and extracting these teeth he believed it could eliminate some overcrowding in the mouth.
Around 1911, Calvin Case became an extremely significant for the field of orthodontics. Prior to this time he had already written a book, 123 articles, and contributed to a textbook on dentistry (https://www.aaoinfo.org/system/files/media/documents/WahlHistoryAJO-DOChapter2.pdf). He strongly supported tooth extraction for correcting facial deformities and ultimately orthodontics were split into two opposing sides on the matter. It ultimately launched the “Great Extraction Debate,” in which modern orthodontists have taken Case’s side.
Edward Angle helped make orthodontics stand out as its own unique field of study. Not only did he publish multiple books on the subject, but he also held 37 patents on dental products including: the E-arch, pin-and-tube appliance, the edge-wise appliance, and the ribbon arch. His devices helped unify orthodontic practice by developing appliances that were universal and did not need to be designed for each individual patient.
In the 1970’s, braces went through some dramatic changes which greatly improved the process. Throughout the decade, dental adhesive was found to successfully stick brackets to the teeth which eliminated the need for individually wrapping each tooth. Additionally, stainless steel reduced both the cost and difficulty of the procedure.
In 1997, the most modern technique for braces was discovered by two people who were not dentists at all. Zia Chishti and Kelsey Wirth combined the technology of a 3-D computer with a simulator to build a clear, plastic retainer that works just as well as braces.
A lot has changed since these times, Dr. King a leading orthodontist in Dayton Ohio uses only the most advanced technology, such as Invisalign and Invisalign Teen.

Sensitive teeth can create problems for almost anyone. Cold drinks and ice cream or exposure to cold air may leave you wishing for a remedy. One of the most common complaints dentists and orthodontists hear about, tooth sensitivity affects as many as 40 million adults in the US, according to the Academy of General Dentistry. Luckily, your dental expert can suggest some possible remedies.

Every joint in the human body is designed to move in a specific way, and the jaw joint is no exception. As such, you will experience discomfort, pain and other issues when a joint fails to move as it should. Since the TMJ (jaw joint) is one of the most complex and hardest working joints in the human body, a misaligned jaw is usually a major cause for concern. Incorrect jaw alignment is when the top and bottom teeth are not aligned. The result of which they do not meet comfortably. Besides being uncomfortable and extremely painful in some cases, misaligned jaws can have adverse effects on your dental health.

Flossing is a vital part of your overall oral health. Flossing right after eating (especially sticky foods) can help remove the food stuck in between your teeth which may lead to tooth decay later on. Aside from brushing, flossing might be the only way to clean in between teeth. In view of this, it is important to know how to floss correctly. Using about 18 inches of floss, you need to wind it in between your two middle fingers leaving an inch or two of floss to work with. Then you need to slide it gently in an up and down motion in between your teeth.
Do not snap or force the floss as this might cause your gums to bleed and get infected. Use clean areas of the floss as you move from tooth to tooth. Following these simple steps can help you remove all the food stuck in your teeth easily. However, there’s also a very effective technique in order to floss successfully whenever and wherever you want.
Practice flossing with your eyes shut. This way, you can do a good job even if you’re at the car, at restrooms without mirrors, and anywhere if you need to floss. You can also floss while in bed, in your desk, or before an in important meeting. Buying several packs of floss and scattering them in the places where you most likely stay will compliment this skill. Being able to floss anytime and anywhere can help improve your overall oral health.

How to overcome your fear of having braces. Anyone who has worn braces will tell you that orthodontic treatment was worth it. Around 4 million Americans have some type of orthodontia, and one-fourth of them are adults. Straight teeth and a winning smile are confidence boosters at any age. Aside from enhancing appearance, treatment has a number of additional health benefits:

Smile. Middle school is a sensitive time in a child’s life. They become independent while beginning to struggle with the issues of popularity, bullying, and their own bodies changing. By 13 years old, most kids have lost all of their baby teeth. While this is not a sensitive topic for them, how their adult teeth grow in may be.
Kids who are embarrassed by their teeth do not smile often. While their circle of friends may not notice, other children and teachers at school may think that they are shy, conceited or maybe that they aren’t paying attention. Not smiling has physical effects as well. When people smile, their bodies release endorphins which help them feel happy and less stressed.
Parents talk to their children about what kinds of clothes and shoes they want to wear to help them feel more confident. It’s also especially important to talk to kids about how they feel about their teeth. Orthodontia is, of course, not just a cosmetic issue. But the cosmetic can definitely out-weigh the functional aspects of getting teeth corrected in a middle schooler’s mind.
Parents should ask their child how they feel about getting orthodontic treatment which could include braces, a retainer, etc. They may have avoided talking about it because they are apprehensive about wearing braces or because they thought seeing an orthodontist was too expensive.
No matter whether they express positive or negative feelings about their teeth, scheduling an initial orthodontic evaluation with an orthodontist is best for the child. Type and length of treatment, as well as cost and financing options, can be discussed at this first visit. It may help them to feel more at ease and be reassured that they can have a beautiful smile.
If you are interested in an orthodontist visit for your child or yourself, please consider contacting King Orthodontics, for the smile of your life.

Smile – Best Facts and Myths 2016
I love orthodontics. I love the challenge of creating healthy and beautiful smiles. I love the people I get to meet and interact with on a daily basis. I love taking care of my patients and giving them a smile they can be proud about.
Orthodontist visit? If you have crooked, overcrowded, or otherwise misaligned teeth, braces are obviously an appropriate corrective option. But what if your concerns go beyond teeth that are crooked or oddly spaced? Do you need to have all of your teeth repaired prior to orthodontic treatment? In most cases, the answer is no. Orthodontists used specialized tools to solve a variety of dental concerns, so in most cases, the repairs can be made as a part of the ongoing treatment process. However, there are a few steps that should be taken to effectively prepare for your orthodontic treatment. Knowing what needs to be taken care of beforehand as well as what is involved in this type of treatment will help you receive more effective treatment as well as be more satisfied with the process along the way.
You’ll need to see your regular dentist for a check-up and cleaning, before getting your new appliances affixed,. This procedure will allow you dentist to assess the condition of your oral health and determine if you have any progressive decay or gum problems. These are two conditions that must be remedied prior to beginning your orthodontic treatment.
It is important that you have any cavities filled or other forms of decay treated prior to the beginning of your treatment. Doing so will help prevent further spread of decay and bacteria in your mouth. Plus it will deter issues with bonding the brackets to your teeth. If there is active decay in any of your teeth, the new appliances attached to your teeth will exacerbate the issue and cause additional concerns.
Likewise, if you have any gum disease or other problems, it is important that this is treated prior to beginning with your orthodontist. This type of issue can leave your gums sensitive and more susceptible to infection. So it is necessary to treat issues with the gums prior to any steps of the orthodontic treatment.
Following a routine check-up with your dentist that results with a clean bill of oral health, you can begin treatment with your orthodontist. It is crucial to maintain regular appointments with your dentist for cleanings even throughout your orthodontic treatment as this will help you avoid cavities and other breakdowns of your oral health.
Knowing what to expect as you begin treatment will help you better prepare for each appointment. You will then feel more comfortable and confident as you begin the process. Your provider will explain what should occur at each appointment, but this timeline provides a rough overview of each of the steps of your treatment.
First Visit – Photos, impressions, and x-rays will be taken of your teeth to create plaster study molds. Your provider will plan your treatment using these records. At this point, determinations will be made if you need any permanent teeth removed if here is not enough space for all of them in your mouth.
Second Visit – In this visit, your orthodontist will explain the specific steps in your treatment as well as what type of appliances are suitable for your condition. Before your appliances are installed, separators will be placed between your molars to create enough room for the molar bands used in traditional treatment. You’ll typically have these bands for a week.
Third and Fourth Visits – These visits are extremely important as this is when your brands and brackets are bonded to your teeth. This is a careful process that will typically take longer than any of your adjustments.
Subsequent Visits – After your brackets and bands have been installed, you’ll have an adjustment every 4 to 8 weeks. These appointments will involve changing the wires, adding springs, and swapping the elastics and other accessories attached to your appliance.
Accessories are an important component of your orthodontic treatment. Elastics achieve proper alignment between your upper and lower teeth. A facemask, headgear, or biteplate can be used when you have a fixed appliance. Your provider will explain exactly how to use each accessory. It is important that you follow his or her instructions. Failure to use your accessories correctly can slow or even reverse the progress of your treatment.
Deband Appointment – Once your treatment is complete, you’ll have a deband appointment to remove your appliances. Your provider will also remove the cement from your teeth and polish them at this appointment. Likewise, new molds of your teeth will be made to fashion retainers. Even after your active treatment is complete, you’ll need to wear your retainers. The ensures your teeth remain in their new position.
While the length of treatment varies, a normal treatment period is roughly 2 to 3 years. You’ll need to make time every 4 to 8 weeks to have an adjustment if you want your treatment to progress in a timely fashion.
Effective oral hygiene practices are vital when you have braces and other accessories. Having these appliances makes cleaning your teeth more difficult to clean. Be sure to brush your teeth following each snack and meal. This will reduce your risk of developing decay and gum disease.
Also, you will want to avoid eating hard food and biting directly into foods that may dislodge your brackets and bands or damage your wires. You should avoid eating hard foods, like nuts, raw vegetables, and some fruits. Also, avoid foods that are high in sugar or that are sticky and stick in your teeth.
You will adjust to your new appliances over time. You may experience some chafing or rubbing initially. Likewise, your teeth and gums will feel sore for a few days after each treatment. This is normal so expect it.
A straight beautiful smile follows your orthodontic treatment. Your provider will determine exactly what needs to be done for your teeth. In most cases, prior repair of teeth is not necessary as your treatment should include rearranging, straightening, and realigning teeth. In some cases, minor repair outside of orthodontic treatment is necessary to remove staining or remove teeth that are causing overcrowding. Call (937) 433-0830 today to schedule your complimentary orthodontic consultation and determine your first step of treatment today.

Teeth extraction. There are many reasons a person could need to have many a tooth extracted. Although the most common reasons are because of decay or breakage, some of the other reasons include new teeth being blocked from growing in properly, ivories that need to be removed in preparation for orthodontic treatment, gum disease affecting the teeth’s bone structures and supporting tissues, cosmetic reasons and the installation of dentures. Whatever their reason is for having them removed, there are millions of people who share one common concern. These people are worried the appearance of their face will be ruined due to the extraction process.
Yes. There is the possibility that your face could experience a slight change upon completion of your orthodontic treatment for the removal of permanent fangs. It is important for people to understand that if any changes in your facial appearance do occur, they will be extremely minor. In fact, most people experience changes that are so small they are not able to be easily seen. So if you are worried that you will end up looking like the Elephant Man after your orthodontic procedure, you can now put those fears to bed for good. It is simply not going to happen.
If your orthodontist suggests that you have some of your teeth removed, he or she is not doing so on a whim. The extraction of teeth is a serious matter and should never be taken lightly. Your orthodontist understands this, so if a recommendation to extract teeth has been made, you obviously have a situation which is serious enough to make your orthodontist believe that extraction is the only course of action. A dental professional’s first priority is to attempt to save the teeth. This is sometimes not possible and extraction is called for. A lack of space in the mouth is a frequent cause for the removal of teeth. Models, pictures and x-rays will all be thoroughly studied before the decision to extract your teeth is made.
A highly trained orthodontist will do everything in his or her power to make sure your appearance does not change after your procedure. The removal of teeth is a procedure that can not be reversed. Therefore, extra care must be taken before this course of action is decided upon. Your orthodontist will first try to come up with an alternative plan that will allow him or her to save every one of your teeth. The position of your lips, the size of your teeth and the size of your jaws are all important details that will be considered as part of the decision making process. If you have a profile you are happy with, your orthodontist will do their best to preserve it.
While it is possible that you will experience minor facial changes if you have teeth removed, these changes will undoubtedly be much more noticeable if you do not have the teeth removed when it is recommended. When a person’s teeth are crowded at a moderate or severe level, the teeth in the front will gradually be pushed forward as the arches start their alignment. Along with the front teeth, the overlying lips will also begin to make their slow journey forward. When this happens, the person will often end up with buck teeth. This will frequently result in a person having difficulty closing their lips. In a case like this, the person’s appearance is much worse than if the teeth had been removed.
While the perception is that the extraction of teeth will only hurt a person’s appearance, the truth is that it is often improved in many cases. When teeth are removed from the side and braces are used to push the front teeth back, a person will no longer have buck teeth that protrude and look unappealing. There is another advantage to having this procedure performed. By pushing the front teeth back in the mouth, the lips will be able to close in a way that appears attractive and natural. This will help the profile of the patient to be improved.
There are many people who believe they should avoid having any of their ivory removed at all costs. While a tooth should never be removed for a frivolous reason, it is important to remember that your orthodontist only has your best interest at heart. He or she would never make the recommendation to extract your teeth unless they thought it was going to help your appearance and orthodontic treatment in the long run. There is one other important thing you should keep in mind as you go along your orthodontic journey. A trained orthodontist will know all of the changes that naturally happen in a person’s face as they age. Because of this, they will be able to predict these changes before they happen and formulate a treatment plan to effectively combat them.
