The Appropriate age for Orthodontics

King-Fact4Orthodontic Fact #4: Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to lose all your teeth before you get braces. In fact, treatments can start at the young age of 7.

Braces Can Start Young

If your dentist has detected a problem with your child’s bite or tooth alignment, an orthodontist may be recommended as early as the age of seven. In many cases, the sooner you begin treatment, the better. It’s actually a misconception that children have to lose all of their baby teeth before they can have any orthodontic intervention. Beginning a course of treatment at a young age could actually act as a preventative measure, shortening the length of treatment and getting positive results sooner. It all depends on the needs of your child and your orthodontist’s recommendations.

Braces and Alternatives to Braces: You Have Choices

When it comes to braces for kids, there are many more options available today. Your child could enjoy color braces that are exciting and unique, grabbing attention everywhere your child goes. Clear brackets are also a popular option. Alternatives to braces include clear aligners that are removable and worn for about the same period of time as traditional braces. In some cases, your child may only need spacers or a retainer to resolve any orthodontic problems. The only way to find out the best course of action for your child is to make an appointment with your orthodontist. Stay on top of any issues that affect your child’s jaw and mouth to ensure your child has a healthy, attractive smile.

The Appropriate age for Orthodontics

In Life; There is a Specific Time for Everything

The Right Time for an Orthodontist Checkup

When most people hear the term “orthodontist,” they think of pre-teens and teens, but the truth is that your child should visit an orthodontist much sooner than their teens. According to the American Association of Orthodontists your child should visit an orthodontist specialist before their seventh birthday. More and more people are becoming aware of the importance of orthodontics for kids and the effectiveness of early detection and braces for kids.

The Benefits of Seeing an Orthodontist

When People think of an orthodontist, the first thing that comes to mind is braces. The truth is that an early visit to an orthodontist may place your child in a position in which corrective measures can be taken that will reduce the need for braces later. As the jaw bone grows and teeth re-position themselves, an orthodontist will be able to evaluate the progress of the bone growth and determine if there are any underlying issues that may not be visible.

There are multitudinous benefits associated with your child having their first checkup before the age of seven. Some of those benefits are:

  •  An orthodontist will be able to detect certain subtle developments in the growth of the jaw as well as any issues with emerging teeth while some baby teeth are still present.
  • There are instances in which your child’s teeth may appear straight to you but have underlying issues that only an orthodontist will be able to detect.
  •  There are also certain conditions in which an orthodontist will be able to achieve positive results that will not be possible once the jawbone is fully developed. These early trips to the orthodontist will help facilitate healthier jaw growth, as the orthodontist can help guide that growth.
  •  Early treatment will help reduce the development of more serious conditions later on.

There are numerous other benefits to getting your child in to see the orthodontist before they turn seven. As with any type of health condition, the earlier you are able to detect it, the more effective you will be at treating it. The concern of many orthodontists is that many parents don’t categorize tooth health in the same way that they do other health conditions, but tooth health is vital to the overall health of the body.

Orthodontic Evaluation is Vital for Long-term Health

It is important for parents to understand that the physiological development of every person is different. This means that you can’t judge the development of one child’s jaw growth based on an older child’s development. This is why it is imperative that each child see an orthodontist early in their childhood. You can take your child to visit an orthodontist to address any potential issues before they become more serious — costing more money and potentially more pain and discomfort for your child.

Although conventional wisdom may have created the belief that you don’t have to worry about getting your child to the orthodontist before they approach their teens, science clearly indicates that they need to see an orthodontist much sooner. Baking Soda: The Secret Potion for Teeth Whitening

Orthodontics, Word of Wisdom

Words of Wisdom No.6 – Brush Your Teeth with Baking Soda Once a Week

Brushing your teeth with toothpaste daily may not be enough especially if you’re suffering on tooth discoloration. Your dentist may recommend bleaching agents or you can also buy over-the-counter medications. However for those who don’t have enough time or resources to buy expensive creams, you could actually use something that can easily be found in your kitchen. Brushing your teeth with baking soda once a week can help improve the color of your teeth. You can use it the same way you use the toothpaste. Using baking soda as toothpaste will remove the stains in your teeth and make them look whiter as you use it regularly.

Using baking soda is a cheap way to achieve the same results in teeth whitening. If your gums start to feel raw, you can alternate brushing with salt every other day. Just make sure you spit it out after brushing though. If you ran out of baking soda, you can also try using apple cider vinegar which can also be found in your kitchen easily. It has the same effects with baking soda when it comes to removing stains and whitening your teeth. It’s also not so expensive compared to over-the-counter bleaching agents.

If you have teeth misalignment problems aside from tooth discoloration, then it would be best to contact the experts. Fixing these types of problems as early as possible is the most cost-effective way to achieve the desired results. Complications may arise if these problems are prolonged. King Orthodontics is certified and qualified to perform orthodontic treatments to patients in Fairborn and Centerville. If you have problems with your smile or your overall oral health, don’t hesitate to contact King Orthodontics at Centerville or Fairborn offices.

Words of Wisdom No.4 – Eat ‘Detergent’ Foods

Have you ever heard of “detergent foods”? If not, they are actually the type of food that can clean your teeth while you are eating them. Sounds ironic but they do exist and I bet you are eating the most popular one – the apple. The apple fruit is known to be the “nature’s toothbrush”. Other detergent foods include popcorn, raw carrots, and celery. In general, the characteristics of detergent foods include crispiness and firmness. As you chew them, it scrapes off the plaque as your teeth grind them. Knowing which foods are considered detergent foods can help you improve your overall oral health.

If you’re going on a sleep over and you forgot your toothbrush, there’s a good way to reduce the plaque on your teeth by eating detergent foods last. Just make sure that the popcorn you eat is unsweetened or it will not be considered as a detergent food in this matter. Other scenarios include parties and other gatherings wherein you will be home late and hence will not be able to brush immediately after eating. If this is the case, just eat the detergent food last.

Overall, aside from detergent foods, there are other things you can do in order to clean your teeth if you forgot your toothbrush in a camping or sleepover. You can buy a toothbrush from the nearest store, ask your friends if they have an extra unused toothbrush, or ask for salt. Just rub the salt gently on your teeth (do not swallow) and then rinse afterwards.

The Importance of Braces and the Period to Wear Them

Many people debate on the period of when they should still have their braces on, it is worth noting that the process of correcting teeth misalignment in most cases takes a long period. Orthodontists advise their patients to have their braces on for a period of not less than two years. During the initial phase, crowding is usually corrected by the removal of the teeth. It is not possible to correct teeth when there is no space between them. The orthodontist may choose to expand or to contract depending on a number of variables such as the size of the jaws, the size of the teeth and the size of the gum that is supporting the roots. The main aim of the first step is creating a room for aligning the teeth.

In cases where patients have spaces between their teeth during this initial process, the spaces are closed in this step. When a patient has some missing teeth, they might need to have the teeth on the jaw with the right number of teeth to be reduced so that they can match the jaw with the missing teeth. However, wearing of the braces should be put in a great concern as it may impact negatively on the child’s morale and self-esteem. At an early age, wearing of dental appliances should be greatly being considered before wearing of dental of braces.

Teeth misalignments may greatly lower the child’s morale and self esteem, especially when approaching adolescence. It is thus wise for a parent to correct teeth misalignment in a child before approaching the age of puberty. Also, if a jaw has extra teeth these will have to be removed too if they affect the tooth structure. When you are having your teeth removed, you should consult your dentist. Have them weigh all the available options and notify you of what to expect once some of the teeth are removed. It helps to know all the possible consequences since it will be less stressful when some of the negative effects start to kick in.

Before removing the braces, also enquire whether the problems have actually been solved as it may cause teeth removal in future. You might need to have a second and even third opinion regarding this. If removal is the only option, they should give you some options to take care of the facial structure once the teeth are removed, such as reconstructive surgery. The factor that makes patient to remove these braces includes discomfort and restriction to the type of diet they eat.

Another demerit with lingual braces is that they are not universal, up to date, there are not many orthodontists who offer lingual braces, since some of the current one’s might have to incur additional cost in looking for and commuting to a dentist who offers lingual braces procedures. Also, one might not feel really comfortable getting their braces put in by a dentist who they have no prior experience with.

nectarous via Compfight cc

Orthodontics is a medical field that specializes in correcting various teeth defects and offers various services such as fixing of braces to correct teeth related problems. Orthodontic treatment thus entails the incorporation of the recent technological advancement all in an aim geared towards offering better solutions to its patients. China has been ranked as one of the top countries that are offering these services in the whole world.

In explaining about orthodontic treatment, one needs to know the importance of this service and the possible consequences if this service is not administered. In addition to that, it is also equally important to know the various forms of administering this service. Some of the importances of carrying out this service to a patient includes, help in correcting teeth misalignments. Some of the cases that comes in with teeth misalignments includes, over biting which is a case experienced when the upper jaw is bigger than the lower jaw. The reverse of the above case is under biting which is a case when the lower jaw is bigger than the upper jaw.

It also helps in correcting cases of overlapping of teeth which may cause the victim to bite the tongue while chewing  or when talking .Crooked teeth can also be corrected using this method. The age of fixing these braces varies in different people; many people fix these braces immediately when these defects start appearing while others prefer to correct the defect at a later date. In extreme cases, fixing of the wrong braces has resulted in teeth removal. Teeth removal on the other hand comes with its own complications which are discussed below.

It tends to change the shape of the face as well as the size of both the upper and the lower lips, it is thus important to correct these defects at an early stage as a precautionary measure. Before fixing these braces one should weigh both fixing of these braces and use of other dental appliances. Second to that, the choice of the type of braces should be done by professionals as fixing of the wrong braces can call for teeth removal .The process of teeth treatment or teeth removal sometimes proves to be an uphill task, this implies that close examination is required before the process  starts. This examination makes use of beam of rays which may impact negatively on the patient’s health.

How to Find an Orthodontist Near Me

Some of the complications that come in with use of these radioactive rays include, frequent headaches as well as loss of memory. Gamma rays have been proven by many specialists to trigger cancer cells which cause uncontrolled growth of body cells. Some examples of these braces includes the lingual braces, ceramic braces and lastly though not the least the Invisalign braces .Lingual braces are preferred by many patients as well as parents since they are invisible. In most cases the lingual braces are fixed on the upper set of teeth while on the other hand the ceramic braces are fixed on the lower set of teeth.

Tumors and Radiations

Do Dental X-rays Cause Brain Tumor?

A tumor refers to the uncontrolled growth of body cells and it can lead to swearing of a part of a body though in this case we put more emphasis on its effects on the brain cells.Cancer or in other words tumor have greatly been known to be triggered by radioactive rays such as gamma rays. In addition to that, one needs to know the component of X rays as it gives a room for body cells being exposed to extreme radiation.  Argument based on the natural composition of the environment reveals that radiation has severe effects on one’s health and thus this explains for the call against depleting of the ozone layer.

Some of the cases that have been reported by patients who have had frequent cases of X ray examination include memory loss and seizures. In addition to that, many patients have complained of frequent headaches accompanied with loss of memory.  High exposure to radiation in many cases has resulted in the destruction of thyroid glands. That notwithstanding x ray has been linked with causing multiple myeloma which is a case of destruction of the bone marrow that in many cases causes an overgrowth of the bone marrow tissues.

)

In addition to causing of brain tumors, X ray treatment have been linked with causing genetic disorders.  A research on the equipment used for radiation purposes have revealed that many of them give out more rays than the necessary amount thus exposing the patient to a higher risk of getting cancer. More to brain tumors, other disease that have been linked to radiation includes cataract which is a heart related disorder and coronary heart problems.

However an x ray is equally important, in countries like Canada it is a requirement for one to have an X ray once a year. The major concern is the protective measures that are taken when carrying out the exercise. Proper clothing should be worn to reduce direct contact with the X ray or any other form of radiation.

Unless it is an emergency case or a situation that calls for great level of urgency, radiation examinations or treatments should be avoided. Relating to the teeth problems, serious cases of tooth decay or teeth removal sometimes call for a closer examination using beams of radioactive rays. Rather than x ray examination, the dentists or rather in this case the orthodontist should prioritize other methods that do not use beams of radioactive rays.

In extreme case, patients who have had several cases of X-ray treatments or examination have at a point in their life turned insane. However such cases have been reported on patients who have been undergoing cancer therapy. Teeth examination only calls for a very low level of gamma ray use hence reducing the risk that the patient is exposed to though frequent cases can result into minor problems such as headaches, loss of memory and frequent seizures. However with proper clothing, such cases can be avoided.

Orthodontist – A Better Option for your Dental Treatment

Access to Truth

An orthodontist’s job may be something that’s very different than what you may think. Many think that an orthodontist is simply an extension of the dentist but in all truth it’s very different from the latter. Orthodontists need to keep doing extensive research to offer their patients better treatment options as well as make sure that they have the latest qualifications from various manufacturers and orthodontic appliance providers. Providing the highest quality technology and treatment options can allow them to cut down treatment’s duration as well as offer up treatment for a variety of different conditions that may affect their patients. New treatments that are available such as Invisalign and Suresmile are extremely revolutionary and are cutting down treatment times and the ease of treatment exponentially. Want to know how Invisalign works? Watch the video!

With new treatment options available that are far easier for orthodontists and patients, many of these new forms of treatment are being passed down to dental specialists and administered by primary dental experts that do not hold true orthodontic qualifications. When you trust in someone that doesn’t have orthodontic qualifications it can lead to results that are less than perfect. A dental specialist simply does not have the same amount of education and can’t deliver the multiple treatment options that an orthodontist can.

How to find out if an orthodontic specialist is a qualified orthodontist or not:

Before you receive any type of orthodontic care there are some great questions that you can ask your orthodontist to make sure that he or she has the required qualifications:

– Which state did you receive your accredited orthodontic license and where are you currently licensed as an orthodontist?

– Did you attend an accredited full-time residency in and orthodontic program? If so which program?

– In which position did you graduate in dental school? Were you near the top of your class?

– Are you a qualified dental specialist, or a full-fledged orthodontist?

How to tell the difference between dental specialists and orthodontists:

When it comes to dental specialists any number of names can be thrown around such as; pediatric dentists, oral surgeons, endodontists, prosthodontists and more. These types of dental specialists have merely specialized in a specific piece of dentistry and this does not make them qualified orthodontists.

Orthodontists are perhaps one of the most rare specialties for dentists to pursue after they complete their qualifications at a school of dentistry. Just 6/100 dentists qualified for an orthodontic program out of a dental school. Orthodontists then need to complete a grueling two-year residency program and then qualified to get a certificate in orthodontics after their residency is completed. Only after they have completed this extra education and received their certification, are these individuals suited to provide treatment in the field of orthodontics.

What’s Different about an Orthodontist?

What is an orthodontist?

Orthodontists

Orthodontists are generally confused with a variety of different dental experts when in fact they are a separate entity entirely. Orthodontists have an extensive education after dental school and are chosen specifically as the top members of their dental class. Orthodontists need to continue their education even after they have received their orthodontic certification so that they can stay up-to-date on the latest treatment options when they become available. The orthodontist treatment options that are available keep changing with new technology and software that are implemented for orthodontists constantly.

Just 6/100 graduates from dental school on average are able to go on and complete an orthodontic registry program. An orthodontist usually takes about 10 extra years after high school before they are able to practice in their field. They need to first complete a college program, dentistry school and then the grueling two-year residency program to eventually qualify for their certification. Becoming a qualified orthodontist takes real work but after a qualification is achieved they can begin making a real difference by helping people to achieve their perfect smile through manipulating jaw movement and by moving teeth using a wide variety of treatment options.

Educational requirements:

It may seem hard to believe that it takes up to 10 years to become an orthodontist after you achieve a high school diploma, but what’s even harder to believe is that you need to continuously strive for excellence the entire way through. Only the top applicants from a related college program will make it through to dentistry school. Someone who is interested in going to dentistry school will most likely need to take an applicable program in health sciences or a science-based degree. Keeping your marks up is paramount through college and then through dentistry school as well is mandatory. Only the top performers in dentistry school will be allowed to advance through and into orthodontic program so it’s very important to get noticed on an application. The two-year residency program for orthodontic experts is very tough and it’s required for orthodontists to be enrolled in this program full-time for two years before they are able to qualify for orthodontic certification.

Ongoing responsibilities:

Once an orthodontists have become certified  they will dedicate their career to providing treatment options that diagnose, prevent and treat a variety of orthodontic issues and conditions that many patients face. They can help their patients to achieve the smiles they’ve always dreamed of as well as help them to avoid health concerns like issues with speech, breathing, sleep and eating. It is their responsibility to complete continuous education and potentially even join into an association that they can deliver a higher quality of care and have access to new treatment options as they become available. Find out more about the importance of an orthodontist.
